Chopped onions, a popular hot dog condiment that had supposedly vanished during the pandemic, were reintroduced by Costco in 2023, much to the delight of shoppers. Business Insider reports that the warehouse club began providing members with little plastic cups of onions instead of the popular topping’s self-serve “onion crank” that was available before COVID. A Reddit user who is a member of Costco claims that this is no longer the case at one warehouse club.
The shopper posted a picture of the onion crank this week on the internet, along with a statement from the anime classic How to Train Your Dragon 2. As lovely as the day we parted ways, it says.
One Costco member noticed the dispenser in Riverton, Utah, and posted about it in the forum titled “The onion grinder is back!” that they had started. Up until very recently, they stated, it was cups of onions.
Users of the social media platform Reddit wasted no time commenting on the rumored reintroduction of the onion crank, a much-requested food court amenity.
Very little world… According to one customer, “I marveled at the return of the onion grinder just two days ago” after eating a hotdog there.
“Nature is healing,” another said.
“Please make this company wide,” someone else remarked.
Some people were complaining about the onion cups at the food court at the same time.
How fortunate! It seems like my Costco is spiraling downwards…According to a Reddit user, “the last couple of years I could get a full small container of onions.” However, on recent occasions, there have been about ten bits of onion in each cup.
According to someone else, my store only ever carries cups of onion, which are rarely in stock.
We contacted Costco to find out if the onion crank dispenser will be accessible at warehouse clubs around the country and if it would be returning. They did not respond right away. Hence, consumers should proceed with caution in light of the recent sighting—and maintain vigilance on their next visit to the food court.
This week at the food court, you won’t only see the onion crank making a triumphant return. Someone on Reddit noticed that purchasing full pizzas at Costco’s food court is now different. Pizza orders placed in other Costco stores must be placed via digital kiosks; customers must then wait for an employee to announce the readiness of their order by calling out their ticket number.
On the other hand, the Reddit user said that their warehouse club no longer uses the number-calling method, but instead has customers stand in a separate line for complete pizza orders. No one knows for sure how many places have made the switch, but a Reddit member from San Francisco said their warehouse “almost never had number calling.”
