Costco has removed yet another food item off shelves owing to a possible health concern, following four products recalled in as many days. Unfortunately, this latest recall concerns a popular seafood dish that many Costco customers love, which is bad news for consumers.
A notification was sent out by Costco on October 22 to members who bought Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon this year between October 9 and October 13. According to the warning, Acme Smoked Fish Corp. of New York, the smoked salmon supplier, has voluntarily recalled some batches because they could be infected with Listeria.
Thankfully, this recall is limited to Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon sold in certain warehouses in the Southeast region, so Costco buyers from other regions of the nation won’t be affected. Lot number 8512801270 is printed on the front of the packaging of all the affected products, followed by the best-before date.
Do not eat the recalled smoked salmon; instead, bring it back to your neighborhood warehouse to get your money back. Acme Smoked Fish Corp. can be reached at (718) 383-8585 for customers who have any more inquiries.
The company expressed deep apologies for the occurrence and promised to take swift action to prevent a recurrence in the recall notice.
The listeria bacteria can infect a wide variety of foods and cause illness to those who eat them. The bacteria can infect anybody, but the CDC reports that pregnant women, infants, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems are at increased risk of complications. Fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and other flu-like symptoms may appear anywhere from a few days to a few weeks following exposure.
Some of the other recalls that Costco consumers have seen this month are also due to Listeria, just like the Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon recall. Among these products are the four that were recalled by Costco in a single week in October: Chicken Truffle Carbonara by Rana, Tagliatelle Grilled White Chicken & Portobello Mushroom Sauce by Rana, Chicken & Cheese Taquitos by El Monterey Mexican Grill, and Southwestern Grilled Chicken Mini Burritos by Red’s Southwestern.
Protein provider BrucePac started a huge recall, which resulted in the removal of all of these food offerings from shelves. There are almost 11 million pounds of beef items that have been recalled and were delivered to various institutions, including schools. There have been additional recalls for items that use components from the supplier, including small burritos, Rana meal packages, and taquitos, because other companies repackage or reuse the meats from BrucePac.
The BrucePac website stated that as of October 17th, no adverse reactions to the recalled meats had been confirmed.
