During your next visit to a local McDonald’s for a McFlurry, anticipate observing a significant alteration in the renowned frozen dessert.
On September 10, the fast-food company will introduce a revamped McFlurry, featuring a new “mini” size option and enhanced sustainable packaging. The McFlurry dessert—creamy vanilla soft serve combined with sugary mix-ins—will remain unchanged. Nonetheless, the introduction of new cups and a reduced size will enable customers to experience the item in novel ways nearly 30 years after its initial appearance on menus.
Guests may request any available McFlurry flavor at McDonald’s as a “Mini McFlurry,” which is approximately half the size of a standard McFlurry. The chain provides an Oreo McFlurry (240 calories per Mini McFlurry) and an M&M’s McFlurry (340 calories per Mini McFlurry) throughout the year in the United States. Furthermore, it occasionally diversifies its offerings with seasonal flavors, shown by the Kit Kat Banana Split McFlurry that was introduced to menus earlier this summer.
McDonald’s states that the tiny size is intended for consumers desiring a McFlurry but lacking the desire for a full-sized cup.
“Do you have a friend who consistently requests ‘just a bite’?” Rather than taking an additional spoon, you may procure a Mini McFlurry for them individually. Alternatively, if you seek a swift afternoon boost, the Mini McFlurry is also ideal for you,” McDonald’s stated in a press statement.
The Mini McFlurry and Regular McFlurry will now be presented in more environmentally sustainable, four-flap cups, which are already in use in certain international McDonald’s countries such as Canada and Indonesia. These cups will assist McDonald’s in achieving its objective of sourcing 100% of its principal guest packaging—specific throwaway items utilized for food packaging at McDonald’s establishments and provided to guests across all ordering channels—from renewable, recycled, or certified materials by the conclusion of 2025. By the conclusion of 2023, almost 86.7% of the objective had been achieved.
Michael Gonda, senior vice president and chief impact officer of North America for McDonald’s, stated, “Packaging updates such as this are significant.” “This innovative approach provides our U.S. fans with an enjoyable McFlurry experience while advancing our packaging and waste commitments.”
This marks the second occasion within the past year that McDonald’s has implemented a significant alteration to its McFlurry. In October of last year, the restaurant declared the discontinuation of its previous straw-like, hollow McFlurry spoons, substituting them with the smaller black spoons utilized for McDonald’s sundaes. McDonald’s stated that this “sustainable glow-up” will assist in diminishing single-use plastic waste in its establishments.
